Many junior data scientists and machine learning engineers tell me they feel stuck in the experience trap. You need experience to land a job, but you need a job to gain experience. As AI keeps growing in 2026, companies want more than just experienced PhDs. They are looking for new, adaptable talent to help with their data systems. If you’re ready for your first internship, I’ve put together a list of 12 Data Science internships you can apply for this week.

Closing Thoughts
When I look at junior portfolios, I often find many generic, half-finished projects. In reality, engineering managers don’t care if you can import a library. They want to see that you can solve a problem from start to finish.
To stand out, work on projects that reflect real-world problems. Find your own messy dataset, clean it, train a model, and deploy it as a simple web app or API. Write clear documentation. If you can show an interviewer that you understand the whole process, from raw data to a working tool, you’ll stand out from most other applicants.
